Welcome!

The Radiology Department at The University of Iowa and its Residency Program have a strong reputation nationally and internationally for excellence in patient care, education, and advanced technology.

Our department has a long and distinguished history. Our first x-ray machine was installed in 1898, three years after Wilhelm Roentgen discovered x-rays. Dr. Bundy Allen, the first appointed University radiologist was one of the charter members of the Radiological Society of North America. The Journal of Roentgenology, later renamed Radiology, was first published at Iowa. You can read more about our history here.

Environment

Our environment is supportive and collaborative. We take pride in our expertise and in having a friendly work environment. Residents in our program work closely in the reading rooms with our learned faculty during their entire training. We have daily didactic lectures and case conferences from all radiology sub specialties. We are also integrating artificial intelligence into our curriculum with a lecture series, journal club, and optional educational month rotations. Our residents and fellows have a reputation of excellence and of being well prepared for academic or private practice careers.

Technology

Our technology is advanced. The University of Iowa Health Care and Siemens have a Value Healthcare Partnership. This brings us their most advanced equipment, including photon counting and dual energy CT scanners, the latest 3.0 and 1.5 Tesla MRI scanners, 7.0 Tesla and dedicated 3.0 Tesla research scanners. This fall, we are also installing a PET/MRI scanner, which will be one of four in the country. Our Nuclear Medicine division is a leader in theranostics, bridging the gap between diagnosis and treatment.

Our Programs

We offer three ACGME-accredited residency programs:

  • Radiology – Diagnostic Residency;
  • Interventional Radiology – Integrated Residency;
  • and, Nuclear Medicine.

Additionally, within the Radiology-Diagnostic Residency program there are options for five different resident pathways:

  • traditional diagnostic radiology;
  • diagnostic and interventional radiology;
  • an accelerated pediatric radiology track;
  • a nuclear medicine track;
  • and, an academic/research track.

We have fellowships in all subspecialties.

When you match into the Radiology Residency at Iowa, you match both into a combined Medicine/Surgery internship year (PGY1) and also into the dedicated Radiology Residency, which is typically four years (PGY2-PGY5). We firmly believe that having an integrated internship year offers many benefits, including learning “the lay of the land” of the hospitals, getting to establish relationships with your fellow interns, residents and staff, and most importantly direct patient care in nationally known medicine and surgery departments here at The University of Iowa. Interns are also allowed two months of diagnostic radiology and one month of research or academic time.

Radiology-Diagnostic

We offer superior training in all aspects of general and subspecialty radiology, including interventional radiology and nuclear/molecular imaging and therapy.

Interventional Radiology-Integrated

Graduates of this program will qualify to take the Diagnostic Radiology-Interventional Radiology (DR-IR) examination offered by the American Board of Radiology (ABR) and will be certified to practice in both the areas of diagnostic radiology and interventional radiology.

Nuclear Medicine

We strive to educate the next generation of leaders in academic and clinical Nuclear Medicine and Theranostics.
